What else happened today
  • 1789 — The text "A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, being the best security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; but no person religiously scrupulous shall be compelled to bear arms." is proposed by committee as the Second Amendment to the US Constitution. This version is not kept.
  • 2008 — Rep. Mark Kirk's attempt to revive the so-called "Assault Weapons Ban" gets sent to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security. That's also as far as it ever gets.
