In his State of the Union address this year, President Joe Biden proclaimed that “Americans deserve the freedom to be safe, and America is safer today than when I took office,” boasting that “[l]ast year, the murder rate saw the sharpest decrease in history, and violent crime fell to one of the lowest levels in more than 50 years.”

Biden Administration Sends Conflicting Signals on Exports, Seems to Favor Heavy Weaponry

The firehose of Joe Biden’s anti-gun executive actions continued last week, as the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) at the U.S. Commerce Department issued an “interim final rule” clamping down on lawful exports of “non-military” firearms.

Iowa: Enhanced Firearm Preemption Legislation Signed by Governor Kim Reynolds

Last week, Governor Reynolds signed House File 2556 into law which provides a much-needed enforcement mechanism to Iowa’s existing firearm preemption statute. The NRA would like to thank Governor Reynolds for signing this critical piece of legislation and her continued commitment to protecting Second Amendment rights in Iowa. NRA also thanks Rep. Bill Gustoff for introducing the bill, and all members of the Iowa legislature who supported HF 2556 throughout this year’s legislative session.

Hawaii: Legislative Session Adjourns, Marking the Defeat of Several Anti-Gun Bills

On Friday, May 3rd, the Hawaii legislature adjourned sine die from their 2024 session. While Senate Bill 2845 passed in the final days of the legislative session and will restrict ammunition possession by individuals under 21, several anti-gun bills failed to advance this year. Thank you to NRA members and Second Amendment supporters for your active involvement during this year’s session.

Colorado: Guns & Ammo Excise Tax Passes Senate Appropriations Committee

Today, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed HB 24-1349, the guns & ammo excise tax. HB 24-1349 reduces the tax from 9% down to 6.5%. The bill will now head to the Senate floor for a vote.
